On November 25, 2013 Iason Hellenic Shipping Co Ltd (IHS) has become the first Greek ship management company exclusively engaged in dry bulk shipping to certify its Energy Management System to ISO 50001:2011 and its Environmental Management System to ISO 14001:2004 following thorough demonstration of  compliance with the said standards.

As a result of rising energy prices, improving energy efficiency has climbed to the top of the strategic agenda for many leading players across several industries including shipping, over the last few years. The ISO 50001 standard, introduced in 2011, represents an important step change in generating principles with the goal of achieving continuous improvement in energy efficiency, energy use and consumption by setting specific targets for such improvements.

IHS is also the first Greek shipping firm to obtain the ISO 50001:2011 certification by RINA Services S.p.A. Although only a handful of shipping firms worldwide have been certified to this ISO standard, according to the German Federal Environment Agency, more than 2,000 businesses across sectors globally have adopted the principles of this standard and have been certified accordingly, including several sites and operations of major dry bulk vessel charterers such as ADM, ArcelorMittal, Bunge, Louis Dreyfus Commodities, SABIC and others.

Mr. Themistocles Al. Petrakis, Commercial Director of IHS noted on the occasion: "Improving energy efficiency and reducing green house gas emissions across the global supply chain have become an increasingly essential element for the success of our clients and our industry. IHS has positioned itself as a leader in the early adoption of technologies, systems and processes that provide robust competitive advantages for its managed fleet. We believe that our focus on continuous improvement of energy use and efficiency will prove to be a potent competitive advantage and will also continue to translate into superior economic performance for our clients and our fleet."
